Baraboo Reads Infinite Country by Patricia Engel

Dr. Diego Román, Assistant Professor of Bilingual and Bicultural Education at the University of Wisconsin - Madison spoke about the complexities of Latinx/e Communities in Wisconsin to kickstart the community discussion. You can listen to his presentation by clicking on the blue graphic.

"My eyes were opened by our guest speaker. Best Baraboo Reads so far."

"As a consequence of Diego (Roman’s) presentation, I need to check my instinctive reaction that Latino’s are from “somewhere else”.

"Thank you for community discussion programs in (a) safe space."

“Stories create community, enable us to see through the eyes of other people, and open us to the claims of others.”– Peter Forbes, photographer and author

Baraboo Story PROJECT

Origin Story
The Baraboo Acts Coalition is continuing what the Baraboo High School Social Justice Club started,  to collect origin stories. Our hope is that by sharing each others stories, we can learn from each other.

This is the Origin story project, a project where we as a community can start to learn more about each other and where we all come from.  All of our stories are interesting.  If you are interested in sharing YOUR story, please note it does not have to be an outstanding story of severe struggles, it can be a success story or even that, JUST a story.  This is a safe space to share a story with others in hopes of sharing a little about your history–your Origin Story.

Celebration Story
Are you a Sauk County resident with a Celebration Story to share with the world? Tell us about celebrations from your past, or ways you celebrate today! Your celebration story reflects who you are, what traditions affect the way you observe important events in your lives, how you “do life” with the people you love. By sharing these stories with others in Sauk County, we can appreciate the values we share while more fully understanding the differences among us that make us unique and interesting.

Immigration Story
The Baraboo Acts Coalition is beginning a project
of recording immigration stories from people in
Sauk County, especially in the Baraboo area.
These stories might be told by people who are
themselves immigrants, or by people whose
parents or other loved ones immigrated here; by
people who immigrated recently or who came
here many years ago; by people who might have
done so with full permission of the United States
government, or without documentation of
permission. Participation of interviewees in this
project is entirely voluntary. Their stories are
audio recorded, keeping the interviewees’
identities confidential in order to preserve their
privacy and safety.

The book was beautifully done, loved the artwork. (It was the first graphic novel I have ever read.) I
think that this book should be shared with younger people and also older people who may not have
been exposed to these types of conversations. By reading and learning about other people's
experiences we can build a world of more understanding and inclusivity. THANK YOU!

Empower Baraboo
12.21

The Baraboo Acts Coalition, in partnership with the Baraboo School District, UW Platteville-Baraboo/Sauk County, the City of Baraboo, UW Madison Extension, and the Sauk County Department of Public Health  hosted Empower Baraboo: Creating a More Just, Equitable, Diverse and Inclusive Community on December 3rd and December 10th, 2021. This workshop took place on the UW Platteville   Baraboo/Sauk County campus and was attended by community members representing a cross-section of business, civic, educational, non-profit and faith-based, area-wide leaders.

I thought the content and facilitation was strong and the experience was great overall. I will keep learning about race and equity, especially how to bridge the political divide when discussing these important topics. I will continue to challenge my own biases.

I came out of the trainings very uncomfortable with my lack of knowledge and awareness of my personal actions or rather my lack of action - it was a phenomenal space created to be vulnerable and absorb from those around me.

First I was excited that there were so many people participating that I didn't already know. The gathering really helped build and grow a leadership cohort for the community. Really important learning happened and valuable to do so in a safe, group setting.

Most agree that last year’s viral photo of Baraboo students was bad — but students and community members alike expressed Monday that it also opened the door for some hard but necessary conversations, self-reflection and growth...
